In Burkina Faso, the aim of the Bioinsectides (Afrique) Project is to develop and to commercialize insecticides based on natural products derived from neem and aromatic plants, in order to replace synthetic insecticides by less toxic and cheaper natural products, and at the same time to create jobs and generate income for rural people in Africa. The primary target of these insecticides in Africa is the Callosobruchus maculatus F., a predator of niebe. The target markets in Canada and elsewhere are the "tétranyque à deuxpoints" and the "aleurode des serres", two devastators of ornamental plants. The project will work on adapting the process developed by the Institut de recherche en sciences appliquées et technologiques for extraction of insecticides from neem by-products. The project will also work on developing a quick and cheap bio-assay method, which will enable the control of the global insecticide activity of different neem extracts, in order to ensure the production of a high quality standardized product. Stable formulations of insecticides in usage conditions will be developed and tested. The institutions involved in the project are: the Institut de recherches en sciences appliquées et technologiques of Burkina Faso, the Research and Development Centre in Horticulture of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Québec) in Canada, Pronatex Inc. of Melbourne (Québec), the Agence de services techniques et d'exploitation des ressources naturelles et technologiques of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and the Société pour la promotion agro-pastorale et industrielle of Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso.
