In Guinea, the aim of the Extraits aromatiques (Guinée) Project was to promote the production of essential oils from Ocimum plant species. Four Ocimum chemotypes have been identified within wild endemic species in four natural regions of Guinea. These are Ocimum basilicum with linalol, methylchavicol, camphor and methylcinnamate as major components, and Ocimum viridae with tymol as major component. The optimum parameters for the vegetal production of these chemotypes have been determined. Negotiations are going on between a private company and the LARADEC (Guinean laboratory) for the commercial exploitation of essential oils from these plants.
