Analytical Chemistry Division (V)

INTERDIVISIONAL WORKING PARTY ON HARMONIZATION OF QUALITY ASSURANCE

Number: 2003-004-1-500

Title: Interdisciplinary harmonised approach to metrological traceability of chemical measurement results

Task Group
Chairmen:
P. De Bièvre

Members: R. Dybkaer, A. Fajgelj, D.B. Hibbert, and L.R. Pendrill

Completion Date: 2006 - project completed

Objective:
To develop a strategy for achieving the IUPAC consolidated approach to metrological traceability of measurement results in chemistry. To make arrangements that this approach becomes available for other scientific/measurement communities where metrological traceability is important but not well developed/defined yet.

Description:
Traceability as currently defined is a "property of the result of a measurement or the value of a standard whereby it can be related to stated references, usually national or international standards, through an unbroken chain of comparisons all having stated uncertainties". (International Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology, ISO, Geneva, 1993)

Traceable measurement results with their associated measurement uncertainty, form the most solid basis for comparability of results at national or international level.

For many years IUPAC has been active in the area of metrology and standardization, including traceability of measurement results (clinical chemistry, analytical chemistry, environment & food, etc.). However, covering different scientific and measurement fields, different approaches to metrological traceability have been developed and a consolidated IUPAC approach is still missing. In addition, there is a fast growing number of fields where metrological traceability is important but has not yet been properly tackled, e.g.,GMO and some environmental parameters (pollutants). The needed work regarding harmonization of approaches related to metrological traceability is therefore:

  • to prepare and promote an IUPAC approach to traceability
  • to offer and agree on this approach with other scientific communities, organizations, groups, etc., dealing with chemical measurements.
