Project

Macromolecular Division (IV)

Number: 410/22/93 > reinitiated as 2005-007-1-400

Title: Guide to polymer terminology and nomenclature

Coordinator(s): W.V. Metanomski

Objective:
To bring to a general and much wider audience, matters of polymer nomenclature and terminology in order to foster clear communication in and a deeper understanding of the subject.

Progress:
(In 1999) The Commission on Macromolecular Nomenclature (IV.1) has confirmed that the Guide should contain the chapters:

  1. Basic Terms in Polymer Science
  2. Terminology of Polymerisation Reactions
  3. Macromolecules in Solution
  4. Crystalline Polymers
  5. Liquid-Crystal Polymers
  6. Degradation and Aging of Polymers
  7. Mechanical Properties of Polymers
  8. Macromolecular Nomenclature

Most chapters have now been written in the format recommended by the Commission, namely, that previously approved terms and names are linked with descriptive text. However, a delay in preparing a complete draft has been caused by the necessity of waiting for the publication, or at least the final approval, of several new documents that form the bases of chapters and are still in the review cycle. In addition, the Commission has chosen to impose a strict guidance on the presentation of rules in the Guide in that each definition and rule cited has to be referred to by its number in the original document. Thus, the chapters will still need to go through another cycle of revision and approval by the working parties.

This project has been initiated by the former Commission on Macromolecular Nomenclature (IV.1), and in 2000 the responsibility transferred to Edward S. Wilks > project reinitiated as 2005-007-1-400
