* Safety Training Program - Call for Host Companies
The Program enables safety experts from developing countries to learn about safety and environmental protective measures by visiting and working in plants of Companies established in industrialized countries. Companies that can offer their support by hosting a fellow are invited to contact Mark Cesa at <[email protected]>.
<http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2006/STP-hosts.html>

* Cooperation with UNESCO
IUPAC and the Division of Basic and Engineering Sciences of UNESCO -the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization— signed a Memorandum on Cooperation in Pure and Applied Chemistry. The two organizations, which have a history of close and successful cooperation, will focus their joint activities on capacity building and information sharing in Africa.

* Solution Chemistry
Chemical and physical processes in biological systems take place in an aqueous environment, and understanding of the properties of solutions is of major importance for advancements in science. Similarly, this holds true for many technologies, where solutions and liquids are in contact with various materials. All this makes the chemistry and physics of solutions one of the most important topics of physical chemistry. This issue of PAC offers an overview of the recent advances in this area of science as they were presented at the 29th International Conference on Solution Chemistry held in Portoroz, Slovenia, 20-25 August 2005.

* Carotenoids
The first International Symposium on Carotenoids took place in
Trondheim, Norway in 1966, and such meetings have continued at
three-year intervals since then. Over that period of almost 40 years,
the carotenoids field has expanded tremendously and diversified into
many fields of study, especially human nutrition and health. There have
also been continued advances in our understanding of the roles of
carotenoids in photosynthesis and photochemistry, the regulation of
their formation, de novo chemical synthesis, and the analytical
techniques available for detailed structural analyses. The seven
articles that appear in this PAC issue embody the themes discussed at
the 14th Symposium held in July 2005.

* Boron Chemistry
The presentations at IMEBORON-XII covered all aspects of boron chemistry
including theoretical studies, synthetic methods of organic and
inorganic boron compounds, novel molecular structures, application of
organic and inorganic boron compounds to organic synthesis as catalysts
or as reagents, medicinal applications, and creation of new materials
(liquid crystals, supramolecular clusters, nanocylinders, molecular
electronic devices, nanomachines, ceramics, etc.). Not only
distinguished senior members of the boron community, but also young
boron chemists took an active part in the conference. Not only
traditional boron chemistry, but also new evolving research areas of
boron chemistry were presented. A selection of the invited contributions
is presented in the 14 papers in PAC issue.

* Advanced Polymers, Composites and Technologies
This issue of Macromolecular Symposia is focusing on papers presented in
the field of synthesis, characterization and technology of modified
polymer systems and aims to increase the interaction and synergy of
understanding between wide areas of polymer sciences. Therefore, it
represents a valuable choice of recent results in a multidisciplinary area.
