* IUPAC-Richter Prize in Medicinal Chemistry
The IUPAC-Richter Prize in Medicinal Chemistry was established by a
generous gift from the Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter, Ltd. (Budapest,
Hungary) to acknowledge the key role that medicinal chemistry plays in
improving human health. By establishing this prize jointly with IUPAC,
Richter wishes to contribute to the international recognition of the
role of research in medicinal chemistry, publicize the company's
commitment to medicinal chemistry research, and further appreciation of
IUPAC's activities.
Call for nominations for the first IUPAC-Richter Prize is now open.

* Standard Atomic Weights Revised
Following its meeting during the 43rd IUPAC General Assembly in Beijing,
the Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights released the
changes to the standard atomic weights of 16 chemical elements. These
changes in the atomic weights will be published in a new Table of
Standard Atomic Weights 2005, which will be submitted for publication in
Pure and Applied Chemistry.

* Chemical Sciences in Changing Times
A collection of papers presented at the 4th International Conference of
the Chemical Societies of the South-Eastern European Countries
(ICOSECS-4) held in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro, from 18-21 July
2004. The title of the conference was Chemical Sciences in Changing
Times: Visions, Challenges and Solutions. Within this broad title, there
were contributions from all areas of chemistry. However, the main focus
of the conference was reflected in three symposia: Advanced materials,
the greening of chemistry, and teaching and understanding chemistry
(dedicated to 150 years of teaching chemistry in Serbia)

* Chemistry and Biological Chemistry of Vanadium
This issue of PAC includes a selection of papers from the 4th
International Symposium on Chemistry and Biological Chemistry of
Vanadium held 3-5 September 2004 in Szeged, Hungary. This conference
attracted over 110 participants from 25 countries and 4 continents.
Plenary and invited lectures as well as posters discussed the inorganic
chemistry of vanadium, vanadium chemistry in catalysis and organic
synthesis, and biological aspects of vanadium chemistry. In the
proceedings is paper titled "Fifteen years of dancing with vanadium",
presented by Debbie C. Crans, the very first Vanadis Award.

* Biological and Synthetic Polymer Networks and Gels
This volume contains selected presentations from the Polymer Networks
2004 Conference (17th Polymer Networks Group Meeting) held in Bethesda,
MD, from August 15-19, 2004. The conference was jointly organized and
sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National
Institute of Standards and Technology under the auspices of IUPAC.

* Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry - IUPAC Recommendations 2005
N.G. Connelly, T. Damhus, R.M. Hartshorn, and A.T. Hutton
The Rules of Inorganic Nomenclature (the 'Red Book'), first published in
1958 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC),
was most recently updated as Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry 1990.
This new edition of the 'Red Book' clarifies and updates recommendations
concerning the names and formulae of inorganic compounds and reflects
major recent developments in inorganic chemistry. Moreover, it presents
recommendations fully consistent with the principles of the nomenclature
of organic chemistry. In order to choose the most appropriate of the
various nomenclature systems described, a flowchart is provided to guide
the reader to a section or chapter where rules can be found for a
particular type of compound or species. Copious examples are
supplemented by an extensive subject index.

* Evaluated kinetic data for combustion modeling
D. L. Baulch, et al.
This compilation updates and expands two previous evaluations of kinetic
data on elementary, homogeneous, gas phase reactions of neutral species
involved in combustion systems [J. Phys. Chem. Ref Data 21, 411 (1992);
23, 847 (1994)]. Individual data sheets are presented for most reactions
but the kinetic data for reactions of C2, C, ethyl, i-propyl, t-butyl,
and allyl radicals are summarized in tables. Each data sheet sets out
relevant thermodynamic data, experimental kinetic data, references,
recommended rate parameters with their error limits and a brief
discussion of the reasons for their selection.
