* InChI Release
Version 1 of IUPAC's International Chemical Identifier (InChI) has been
released; software, documentation, source code and licensing conditions
are available from the IUPAC website at www.iupac.org/inchi.

* IUPAC Poster
Prizes - review/update
IUPAC Poster Prizes recognize outstanding poster presentations at IUPAC
Congresses, at IUPAC division/standing committee-sponsored conferences,
and at designated national meetings. Each NAO may pick one conference
a year at which to award IUPAC Poster Prizes.

* Plasma Chemistry
Recent advances in thermal and nonequilibrium plasma, as well as other
more specific developments in plasma diagnostics, biomaterials, microelectronics,
plasma spray, polymer treatment, and plasma modeling, were presented
at ISPC-16. The invited plenary and topical lectures were representative
of the great progress in the different areas of plasma chemistry, and
the Feb 2005 issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry offers a good
overview.

* Solubility Phenomena
The March 2005 issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry includes plenary
and invited lectures presented at the 11th International Symposium on
Solubility Phenomena-Including Related Equilibrium Processes. In even
years since 1984, these symposia have been held under the auspices of
IUPAC and the respective key lectures have been published in PAC.
The scientific topics covered in this issue reflect the stimulating
application-oriented atmosphere of this symposium.

> Making an
imPACt
The year 2005 is seeing many changes in the journal production workflow,
starting with the full implementation of the online submission and peer-review
system. Also, starting with the January issue, all metadata for the
online edition are generated using a new procedure based on the extraction
of information from the files produced for the printed edition. The
ability to harvest these data, coupled with further programming, now
allows the journal to take part in CrossRef.

* IUPAC Prize
for Young Chemists - 2006 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.
Deadline: February 1, 2006 - for entrants that receive their Ph.D. (or
equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2005.

* Aq-Solutions
Wouldn't it be nice to have in one piece of software all the tools and
programs to analyze the quantitative treatment of equilibria in solution?
You can have it - Aq-Solutions includes programs for the quantitative
correction of stability constants for ionic strength changes and temperature
changes, for the calculation of gas solubilities, for speciation and
for titration simulations.

* Philosophy of
Chemistry
The International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry (ISPC) Summer
Symposium invites scholars to contribute papers in the general area
of the philosophy of chemistry, including the history of chemistry and
philosophical aspects of chemical education, as well as closely related
subjects. The Ninth Summer Symposium will be held 7-11 Aug 2005, at
the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville.

* IUPAC Kinetic
Data - web site updates 21 March 2005
The latest summary has been released. The March 2005 version now supercedes
the July 2004 version. The major change is the new recommendation for
the HO + HCHO reaction. New FOx, ClOx, BrOx and IOx recommendations
are included. New data sheets for reactions of alpha-pinene, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol
2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanal and pinonaldehyde have also been added.

* Open Access
journal for organic chemistry
In March, the Beilstein-Institut announced the launch of the first major
Open Access journal for organic chemistry. Beilstein Journal of Organic
Chemistry will be published by the Beilstein-Institut in co-operation
with BioMed Central, the Open Access publisher. The peer-reviewed online
journal will begin publication during 2005.
