Since I was a graduate student, I have appreciated the 'deadline
effect
'. You know what I am talking about! For instance, that note you
wrote in red in your agenda that says 'finish report' or 'submit
proposal'. These are all arbitrary deadlines, and in the big picture,
these are somehow meaningless. On the other hand, they force us to bring
to closure projects that we sometime have worked on too long. The coming
IUPAC General Assembly/Congress has that effect on the IUPAC-ers:
members, officers, staff at the Secretariat, we all engage in that sort
of 2-year marathon, with a last sprint in the next few days. In recent
weeks, we have received more reports than usual, and those are now
finalized for publication in PAC. We also received updates for the
website, about projects which have made progress or have been completed
or abandoned. When the GA/Congress has passed, the incentive to share
and keep up-to-date information might diminish. However, the IUPAC
website will stay up, and as always the accuracy of its contents depends
on you. Just let me know what needs attention.

* Photochemistry
The XVIIIth IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry (Dresden, Germany, 22-27
July 2000) offered an excellent contemporary cross-section of the many
facets of photoscience, including the participation of about 480
researchers, 26 plenary and invited lectures, 27 oral presentations in
up to three parallel sessions, three workshops, and about 350 posters.
The fields of theoretical, physical, applied, biological, organic,
supramolecular, and inorganic photochemistry are well featured. In
addition, a tribute to the 20th Century developments in photochemistry
is presented by H.D. Roth.
Selected lectures are published in Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 73, No. 3, pp.
395-548 (2001);
Symposium editor, H.J. Kuhn

* Chemistry of Natural Products
The purpose of the 22nd IUPAC International Symposium on the Chemistry
of Natural Products, (São Carlos, Brazil, 3-8 September 2000) was to
bring together renowned specialists, researchers, and students from all
over the world, from disciplines of the pure and applied natural
products sciences, to discuss and exchange their views and experience,
all concerned with the sustainable development of "Natural Products on
the Last biological Frontier'.
Selected lectures are published in Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 73, No. 3, pp.
549-626 (2001);
Symposium editors, O. R. Gottlieb and M. F. das Graas Fernandes da Silva

* Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry II. Recommendations 2000
McCleverty, J.A. and Connelly, N.G.
This new book addresses such diverse chemistry as polyanions, isotopic
modification, tetrapyrroles, nitrogen hydrides, inorganic ring, chain,
polymer, and graphite intercalation compounds. It is a complement to
Part I which is mainly concerned with general inorganic chemistry
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/books/author/mccleverty.html>

* Macromolecular Nomenclature
The 1991 edition of the Compendium of macromolecular nomenclature is now
available online.
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/books/author/metanomski.html>
In addition, an easy and less formal guide to IUPAC recommendations on
macromolecular (polymer) nomenclature is also available. It is intended
for the authors of papers and reports in polymer science and technology.
