41st IUPAC Council Meeting

Nominee for the Bureau

Prof. Chunli Bai (China)

Prof. Chunli Bai

Prof. Chunli Bai graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Peking University in 1978 and received his M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He worked at California Institute of Technology as a Research Associate from 1985 to 1987, and later joined the Institute of Chemistry of CAS. From 1991 to 1992, he was a visiting professor at Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University, Japan. Currently he is serving as the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, President of Chinese Chemical Society, Vice President of Chinese Material Research Society, Executive Council Member of Chinese Electron Microscopy Society, Standing Council member of Chinese Crystallographic Society (CCrS) and Editor-in-Chief of China Basic Science. He is elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Chunli Bai has been very active in the field of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) since 1985, when he conducted research at the California Institute of Technology. He has continued working in this area after he came back to China in 1987 to initiate and promote the development of SPM research in his own country. He led the research and successfully developed the first Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) for operation in air, Low-Temperature STM, UHV-STM, Laser-AFM and the first Ballistic Electron Emission Microscopy (BEEM) in China, which are applicable to the studies of various specimens under various environmental conditions. Combining scanning probe microscopes and other techniques, Prof. Bai and his colleagues has studied a wide variety of materials with emphasis on the organic and biomaterials structures.

Prof. Chunli Bai has been an invited speaker at various universities, institutions and symposia the world over. He has over 250 publications to his credit in peer-reviewed journals, plus 6 patents. He is the author of 10 books and several book chapters published by the well-known Springer-Verlag and other publishers, including the first monograph in the world on the subject of STM, which was awarded the China Book Award in 1993. As the editor-in-chief, he has edited 15 books in the series of "Doctoral Books". Prof. Bai has won 16 awards and prizes for his contribution to the science community, especially to the development of SPM and its applications in China. He is likewise influential in the work SPM science community; as for over a decade he has been a Member of International Organizing committee of the International conference on Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy and Related Techniques.

As a National Representative of IUPAC, he has twice (in 1995 and 1997) attended the General Assembly (the council and commission I.3). He also served as a Member of the Organizing committee of various academic conferences and an adjunct professor in Tsinghua University, Peking University, and many top Chinese universities.
