Abstract: This paper deals with the role of chemistry in the
design of high-tech ceramic materials. Grain boundary composition of
polycrystalline ceramics dictates the hardness fracture toughness and
creep resistance of liquid-phase sintered silicon nitride and silicon
carbide materials.
