Abstract: This article provides an overview of our work on the synthesis, molecular structure, and bonding of a novel class of 13-vertex closo-metallacarboranes incorporating the h7-carboranyl ligand. This bonding mode can only be observed in the d0/fn transition-metal ions with the proper size.

* Lecture presented at the XIXth International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry (XIX ICOMC) , Shanghai, China, 23-28 July 2000. Other presentations are published in this issue, pp. 205-376.
