In the last decades,
investigation in the field of preparation and application of polymer
membranes achieved remarkable success. A large number of papers and
conference contributions devoted to this topic reflect the fast development
of membrane research.
With the aim
to meet an ever-increasing interest in knowledge concerning synthetic
polymer membranes and their utilization in modern technologies, the
well-known Prague Meetings on Macromolecules (P.M.M.), already 61
in total, included the issue of membranes 'In the programme. The 41st
Microsymposium of P. M. M. "Polymer Membranes" under the auspices
of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry was held at the
Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the
Czech Republic, in Prague on 16-19 July, 2001. More than one hundred
participants from 19 countries took part in this scientific event.
comprised 8 main and 20 special lectures of prestigious experts, and
74 poster contributions. Particular attention was paid to the following
topics: (a) conductive polymer membranes, (b) polymer electrolyte
membranes for fuel cells, (c) gas separation membranes, (d) membrane
hybrid systems, and (e) polymer membranes for separation of biological
mixtures. The quality and wide scope of the presented results is convincing
evidence that developments in this attractive research area continue
at a great rate.

My sincere thanks are addressed to Karel Ulbrich, Director of the
Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, and to P.M.M. members with
Drahomír Vyprachticky (Head) and Jaroslav Kahovec (Ediitor).
I owe my thanks also to the International Advisory Board, to the Local
Programme Committee for its demanding work, and to sponsors for financial
