Title: Fundamental toxicology for chemists

Task Group
J.H. Duffus

Member: H.G.J. Worth

Completion Date: 2006 - project completed

To prepare a second edition of the textbook titled 'Fundamental Toxicology for Chemists' as an IUPAC project.

Several of the authors have already expressed their wish to revise and update their contributions. Dr Worth and I can also see that there have been significant advances in toxicology arising from the developments in genomics and other "-omics" which should be included in an up-to-date textbook.

The Royal Society of Chemistry is supportive of this project, and will publish the revised edition.

The textbook, "Fundamental Toxicology for Chemists" started as a joint project of the IUPAC Commission on Toxicology and the Committee for the Teaching of Chemistry, suggested by the CTC, and was published in 1996 on behalf of IUPAC by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The purpose was to facilitate the introduction of toxicology in the tertiary curriculum for chemists. The 1st edition was successful with nearly 3,000 copies sold. However, the need for such a text is as strong now as when it was first published. The editors (Duffus and Worth) consider that the time has come to update the text and to prepare a second edition, to be published by the RSC, who are in agreement in principle. The editors will review the present chapters, decide what additional chapters are needed (and whether some should be removed, although this is unlikely). Following this review, the editors will, where appropriate, invite (mostly the same) authors to revise chapters and commission new material as needed. It may be noted that many of the authors were associated with or were members of the IUPAC Commission on Toxicology and we should look for the same relationship to the new IUPAC Division VII Subcommittee on Toxicology.

Toxicology is an increasingly important aspect of chemistry but frequently neglected. It is often not included in the chemistry curriculum and this text is designed and written to fill that gap. Toxicology is perceived by the public as part of the role of the chemist, but the chemist is not usually trained to cope with this public expectation.

The project will be most effective if carried out in collaboration with the Committee on Chemistry Education (CCE).

The revised textbook will complement the editors presentations on 'Essential Toxicology' which are now available as an educational resource on the IUPAC web site. It is likely that the revised text can provide a basis from which additional presentations can be prepared to add to those already available on the website.

March 2005 - The editing of the texts for the second edition is proceeding and the complete edited version will be delivered to the Royal Society of Chemistry is the spring 2005. All existing chapters have been revised and a number of new chapters were prepared, including chapters on pharmaceutical toxicology, toxicology in the clinical laboratory, and pathways and behaviour of chemicals in the environment.
