Objective:
Detailed planning of a workshop examining applications of solubility to environmental problem solving.

Description:
Starting in 1974 with the First International Symposium on Solubility Phenomena (ISSP), the Solubility Data Commission (V.8) has held IUPAC sponsored conferences on scientific aspects of solubility every two years.

> Information about past and planned ISSP [following link to Subcommittee homepage] including venues and references to published Plenary and Invited lectures

Thorough planning for an applied focus will begin with the 10th ISSP to be held in Varna, Bulgaria in August 2002. The following General Focus Statement has been agreed upon:

Solubility is a fundamental property of all substances and can greatly influence the composition of both naturally occurring and man-made chemical systems. In many of these systems understanding the solubilities of the chemical components opens the door to alterations and manipulations of systems which may reduce the spread of pollutants, assist in the recycling of industrial wastes and in other ways improve the quality of environments. This workshop will focus on the linkages between the fundamental chemistry of solubility and technology innovations which can lead to environmental improvements. Particular emphasis will be given to the solubility of industrial wastes and pollutants in aqueous systems.

Within the framework of the General Focus Statement detailed planning is now underway of a workshop, "Solubility Phenomena - Applications for Environmental Improvement", to be held as part of the 10th ISSP. Planning is directed toward five elements:

  1. identification of appropriate international bodies for collaboration, co-sponsorship, and external funding,
  2. identification of specific environmental issues in and beyond the regional venue of the workshop (Southeastern Europe) to which improved knowledge of solubility can contribute,
  3. selection of workshop speakers and discussion leaders,
  4. devising means of outreach to environmental specialists, and
  5. securing the external funding necessary for holding the workshop.

Progress:
Most of the communication necessary for planning will be conducted on the internet. However, two face-to-face meetings are considered highly advantageous and will be held in conjunction with the 9th ISSP and 41st General Assembly.
