COMMISSION ON SEPARATION METHODS IN ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
(V.3)
Number: 530/12/97
Title: Hold-up volume in column chromatography
Coordinator(s): J.
A. Garcia-Dominguez
Completion Date: 2001 - project completed
Objective:
Although it is a fundamental concept in chromatography the hold-up
or void volume) of a column system has been defined in different ways
in different systems. A greater difficulty is lack of agreement on the
methods that can be used to determine the measurement. The aim of the
project is to provide a critical review of the background and theory
of the meaning of the terminology and to critically compare the different
methods of measurement and of the significance of the values that they
generate.
Progress:
A final draft has circulated to Commission members and submitted to
the Division. Some of the terms have been coordinated with project
530/13/97.
A revised document is submitted to public review comments until 28
February 2001

recommendations
