COMMISSION ON HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS AND SOLID
STATE CHEMISTRY
SUBCOMMITTEE ON CHARACTERIZATION OF CARBONACEOUS MATERIALS AND NEW
CARBONS
Number: 232/1/91
Title: Characterization of Carbonaceous Materials and New
Carbons
Coordinator(s): H.P.
Boehm
Remarks: Active interaction with the carbon community
Completion Date: 2000
Objective:
National standards for the characterization of carbon
materials such as A.S.T.M., D.I.N., I.S.O. etc. differ in important
parameters (e.g. sample size, particle size, temperature, ...). In
some cases these differences affect the results because specific requirements
for carbonaceous materials have not been considered. Many of the national
standards for the characterization of carbon materials compiled in
an earlier Commission paper by W.S. Horton in PAC 51, 1561 (1979)
are outdated. The objective of the project is to collect the actual
relevant national standards, to point out differences, and to seek
for each characterization method an expert's comment on the effect
such differences may have on measurements with samples encountered
in industrial and research laboratories.
Progress:
The Subcommittee has met, refined its definition of the task,
and solicited input for its report. The report will compile and update
descriptions and recommendations for methods used to characterize
carbon.
