*Pure and Applied Chemistry
The IUPAC Journal, Pure and Applied Chemistry, is distributed monthly and contains lectures from selected IUPAC-sponsored conferences, as well as Technical Reports and Recommendations from IUPAC.  Abstracts for the lectures are freely available online when an issue is published, as are the full texts of Technical Reports and Recommendations.  One year after a volume is completed, the entire contents of the volume are made available on the IUPAC Website. Volume 74, published in 2002, is now available.

IUPAC strives to be a part of the movement to provide free and open access to scientific information via the internet.  It recognizes that researchers living in particular regions may not possess the financial resources necessary to purchase journals and texts vital to their efforts.  By providing free access to Technical Reports and Recommendations at the time of publication, IUPAC is helping to disseminate information necessary for the worldwide communication of chemical data.

Highlights from Volume 74 include lectures presented at the 11th IUPAC International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis, 15th International Symposium on Plasma Chemistry, 3rd IUPAC International Conference on Biodiversity, 3rd Florida Conference on Heterocyclic Chemistry, 13th International Symposium on Carotenoids, 10th International Symposium on Solubility Phenomena, 5th Conference on Solid State Chemistry, and the IUPAC Workshop: Impact of scientific developments on the Chemical Weapons Convention.

There were also two Special Topics covered within the Volume, each in its own issue: the Science of Sweeteners and Nanostructured Advanced Materials.  Recommendations and Technical Reports from IUPAC published in 2002 include Naming of new elements; Measurement of pH. Definition, standards, and procedures; Natural and synthetic substances related to human health; and Isotope-abundance variations of selected elements.

To view the contents of Volume 74, or to see the Technical Reports and Recommendations and Lecture Abstracts from Volume 75, please visit the IUPAC website.

IUPAC was formed in 1919 by chemists from industry and academia. For over eight decades, the Union has succeeded in fostering worldwide communications in the chemical sciences and in uniting academic, industrial and public sector chemistry in a common language. IUPAC is recognized as the world authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology, standardized methods for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically evaluated data. In more recent years, IUPAC has been pro-active in establishing a wide range of conferences and projects designed to promote and stimulate modern developments in chemistry, and also to assist in aspects of chemical education and the public understanding of chemistry.
IUPAC's next Congress and General Assembly will be held in Beijing, China 14-19 August 2005.
