* April 1st deadline
IUPAC members planning to go to the General Assembly this coming August
should return their Participation Questionnaire to the Secretariat no
later than 1 Apr 2005. The same deadline applies for the Congress
registration at a discounted rate.
<http://www.iupac.org/symposia/conferences/ga05/index.html>

* New Online Submission and Peer Review System for PAC
An online submission and peer-review system has been implemented for
Pure and Applied Chemistry. The new web-based workflow for manuscript
handling will enable Scientific Editor James Bull to implement peer
review of manuscripts from IUPAC-sponsored conferences and also provides
support to John Lorimer and Bernado Herold, editors of IUPAC
recommendations and technical reports and respectively chairman and
secretary of the Interdivisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature
and Symbols.

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2006 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.
Deadline: February 1, 2006 - for entrants that receive their Ph.D. (or
equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2005.

* Chemistry of Natural Products and Biodiversity
Bioresources have tremendous potential to lead to the development of new
pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and agrochemicals. An impressive number
of modern drugs have been isolated from natural sources, particularly
from plants. Besides plant materials, the past century has seen an
increasing role played by microorganisms in the production of
antibiotics and other drugs for the treatment of serious diseases. More
recently, marine organisms have proved to be a rich source of novel
bioactive agents. To address these issues, the University of Delhi in
collaboration with the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research
(CSIR, India) organized a joint meeting of the IUPAC 4th Conference on
Biodiversity and the 23rd Conference on the Chemistry of Natural
Products, which was held 26-31 January 2004 in Delhi. Papers based on
presentations at the Conference constitute a full issue on PAC.

- - - - - -- BEAKERS & FLASKS -- - - - - -

* YAC
Say it like 'yak' - YACs are not the usual long-haired humped Tibetan
ox, but nevertheless these Young Ambassadors for Chemistry are finding
ways to make lasting impressions ... thanks to Lida Schoen for her
leadership in a project that supports science and language teachers and
their involvement in the public understanding of chemistry.

* Aq-Solutions
Wouldn't it be nice to have in one piece of software all the tools and
programs to analyze the quantitative treatment of equilibria in
solution? You can have it - Aq-Solutions includes programs for the
quantitative correction of stability constants for ionic strength
changes and temperature changes, for the calculation of gas
solubilities, for speciation and for titration simulations.
